The Urban Sketchers blog is 1 year old today. More than 3,500 posts with drawings from 56 countries have followed this first sketch — a view of Casa Batlló in Barcelona — posted by Lapin.Since that first day, the blog has received more than 1 million visits and we've established a network of hundreds of members in more than 50 countries. From Venice to San Francisco, Greece to Bhutan, you can travel vicariously through the thousands of drawings urban sketchers are sharing here and on our flickr group.
But there's much more of the world that still needs to be drawn, and sketchers we still have to meet. That's why we want to take our online community of artists who draw on location to the next level.
Looking ahead to the coming year, we're taking the steps to formalize Urban Sketchers as a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the artistic, storytelling and educational value of location drawing. I know, that sounds serious. But I'm sure it's going to be an exciting new adventure for USk. As a nonprofit, we plan to raise money to give grants and scholarships to artists. We also aim to publish a book and organize an international meetup every one or two years — so start saving for that trip!
We hope to count on your support. As a start, help us spread the news about our anniversary on your own blogs — you may use our press release — and via Twitter and Facebook.
