I seem to be getting out to sketch quite a lot lately! On Thursday evening I went to the Old Park Station for The Night of a 1000 Drawings - a charity event where the public, artists and novices, are asked to donate A5 drawings to be sold for R100 each on this one night. I only heard about it the day before, so didn't draw for it, but will certainly be doing so next year.I was knocked out by the absolutely beautiful old building it was held in - soaring arches (I think in my sketch I could have added another inch or so
of pillar between the top and the bottom halves), intricate facebrick, amazing woodwork and marble, mosaic tiles - I took this photo -> with my cellphone in one of the side rooms - all gob-smacking when I had no idea such a place existed in this city I've been living in for 30 years. I only knew of 'new' Park Station next door that is a vast concourse and the main train terminus for Joburg. The parquet floors are in a sad state and the building seems disused apart from the odd event like this one. I hope somebody has plans to preserve and restore it, I can't find any reference to that on the net...I found these photos though by Rasty Knayles of 50 year old posters and graffiti he found in some deserted passages down in the depths of Park Station.
