Málaga, Puente de los Alemanes

I have recently written about the river of my city. One of the bridges spanning over the riverbed is called "Puente de los Alemanes" (Bridge of the Germans) Being curious about that fact, I learned that it was a present from Germany after a terrible flood in 1907 that destroyed all the bridges of the city.

Intrigued by such generosity I found that a german school ship named S. M. S. Gneisenau ran aground in December, 1900 when anchored off Málaga harbour and a sudden and powerful stormn awoke.

Then I went to the foreign cemetery of the city where the sailors that lost their lives were buried and a memorial was built to keep their memory. It is such an emotive corner.

Apparently local fishermen and sailors took such great risk to rescue the survivors in the middle of the gale that many of them lost their lives. Many of the members of the german crew were also warmly received on the homes of the people of Málaga; that's why Germany was so sensitive when this time the tragedy struck Málaga.

I thought this was a beautiful story appealing to the best of human condition and was worth to be blogged on USk. I hope you would think the same...
