My son was busy writing exams in the buildings on the right of
this sketch, at the Joburg Civic Theatre this afternoon - I went around the corner to see if the ballet students of the South African Ballet Theatre were practising in their wonderful studio that overlooks the city, and there they were - the tiny figures in the middle row of windows. (The bigger leaping figure higher up is a silver hanging sculpture.)I had my very own security guard, Irvin, watching over me as I sketched. He posed for me once I'd finished the buildings - I'll take him a print when I take my son back on Friday to write his next exam. I'm hoping I might be able to go inside the ballet studio and sketch from the inside looking out.

Hey, Cathy Gatland, I recognize you from cruising your blog a week or so ago. I love this Urban Sketchers blog. Nice to see you here and this is a wonderful watercolor sketch. Watercolor journaling and sketching in general are under rated. Nothing like good drawing.
Hope you to go inside and capture the shapes of students. The print will be a wonderful present for him. Nice drawings!
Oh, this is great. The reflections on the building, and the security guard is wonderfully done. Did he like the sketch himself?
Rob - sorry to reply so late - he did like it, but when I went back on Friday he wasn't there to give it to him. I couldn't find the entrance to the ballet school either, which he was going to show me. I'll go back another time though.
