No lift in ancient houses

A bucket with a long rope makes the traditional alternative in Naples, for small objects. "Pull down the bucket!" is a frequent shout in every narrow streets like this, drawn from my studio.

What are usually some of the small objects?

You are right...:food for instance! You can make a phone call to the grocery nearby, a boy will come and put the stuff in the bucket. You'll pull him back half an euro as a tip... The dialect name for the bucket is "panaro", which means for bread.
