Sketching workshop in Jaca, day 3 and (sadly) the last

Jacasketchplazabigger091209

It was another amazing day of sketching and making new friends at the workshop organized by the University of Zaragoza in Jaca. I've drawn so much over the past three days that I may actually need a vacation from sketching after all this. But it was worth every second of it. I've met incredibly friendly, funny and talented people here. It may sound like a cliché but it's really true. In a matter of hours I felt like I had known these people for years.

I'm back to my room at the Residencia Universitaria now after a group dinner at the mesón, where more than 30 of us shared the longest table I've ever seen — "This looks like a wedding," someone said. We ate, sketched, drank and left, only to continue the celebration at a nearby bar. In the following days I'm sure there will be more posts about Jaca here from myself, Simo, Enrique, Eduardo and Lapin, but I can't go without sharing at least some bits from the day to let you know how it all ended.

This morning my sketching group chose to draw by the cathedral, which dates from the 11th century and is one of the most important examples of Romanic architecture in Spain. At the top you can see me holding the first sketch I did up. Later I followed what Eduardo Salavisa had done the day before and tried to draw as many sketchers as I could.

I also took a video of Eduardo sketching an acquaintance of a workshop participant who just happened to walk by with her dog.

In the afternoon I had my presentation about how USk started and my experience as an artist/journalist at The Seattle Times (pdf file here, in Spanish. Let me know if you'd like it in English and I'll try to work on a version after I recover from the sketching hangover.)

And last, the workshop closed with an exhibit of the sketchbooks everyone has been using since Thursday. You may see some photos at the flickr group for the workshop, which is already up: de vuelta con el cuaderno.

Thanks to professor Clara Marta for having the vision and leadership to get the University of Zaragoza to include a workshop about sketchbooks in their summer program and make it all happen. I had a blast. Muchísimas gracias Clara!
