Sketching workshop in Jaca, Spain, day 2

rodrigosketching

lapintalkcalepinsenriquetalkI learned a great deal from hearing panelists Lapin, Enrique Flores and Simo Capecchi talk about drawing and sketchbooks today. Their love for urban sketching is contagious. Some quick gems from their presentations: Enrique explained how he likes to draw his shoes after a long hike or shoes he's used on his expeditions to India, Cuba or other countries around the world. He said it's painful to throw them away when they're broken and the sketches help him remember them. Simo said she couldn't sleep for a week after a life drawing session at a workshop with artist Pedro Cano in Naples. "Disegnare un home nudo ha estado alucinante," she said. And Lapin talked about sketching during his honeymoon trip around the United States. At some point he was disappointed because his wife, aka Lapinette, said he could only draw two cars before they had to keep going and do something else.

Above are some photos I was able to take before my camera ran out of battery. On the left picture you can see some folks having a good time at the patio of the Residencia Universitaria where everyone is staying — we are about 70. On the center you can see participants looking at the exhibit of sketchbooks brought by the panelists. And on the right is a closeup of some of the sketchbooks belonging to Enrique Flores.

We are talking about creating a Flickr group where all the sketches and photos everyone is doing during the workshop can be shared for everyone to see. I'll let you know more about that tomorrow.

Top sketch: Rodrigo, of Burgos, takes in the view of the mountain known as Peña Oroel, during today's afternoon sketching session.
