handcar regatta, santa rosa, ca

Sunday was the second annual handcar regatta, a celebration of steampunk culture and exposition of mechanical and artistic wonders. Set in Santa Rosa's historic Railroad Square, the main event was a race featuring all manner of handmade railcars propelled by everything from classic handcranks to pedal power to man-sized hamster wheels to giant wind turbines - some going for speed, some for style, and some for both. Here are a couple of the contestants, both by an outfit called Krank Boom Clank. The three-wheeler on the left is Murray the Fish. On the right you can see one of the front wheels of the Hennepin Crawler, featuring twin rubber tires for travel on ground, and a central groove for riding the rails. That's a flame thrower above the wheel.

Here are a few of the participants in their steampunk finery, kinetic sculpture from Burning Man, dancers, curiosities, and a view down the racing strip between heats.

Stunning work Gary. Lovely loose feel to the work and the sepia gives it a nice western antique quality

Great stuff Gary, I'm a bay area sketcher too. I luv ur work. You've got a great web page. I'm just over the hill from SR, and I like bikes/cars/alternative vehicles/creative stuff etc. I'll try to catch that event if they have it next year.

Splendid! How privileged we are to have folks like yourselves participate in our humble event!

I can identify a few bits in both scans:
Krank-Boom-Clank has many more images and info about their "kinetic conveyances of whimsy".

On the second sketch:

1) Burlesque clown in lower left: Fou Fou Ha!

2) Bespectacled lass and excellent artist: Else Olava

3) Giant sculpture in background: Bryan Tedrick's Portal of Evolution

4) Belly dancer in lower right: WildCard BellyDance

And, of course, all took place at The Great West End and Railroad Square Handcar Regatta & Exposition of Mechanical & Artistic Wonders!
