A site in many a city, though I don't think these are markers for drug territories but likely to be for the fun of it.

1. We draw on location, indoors or out, capturing what we see from direct observation.
2. Our drawings tell the story of our surroundings, the places we live and where we travel.
3. Our drawings are a record of time and place.
4. We are truthful to the scenes we witness.
5. We use any kind of media and cherish our individual styles.
6. We support each other and draw together.
7. We share our drawings online.
8. We show the world, one drawing at a time.
The Urban Sketchers logo was created by Italian graphic designer Franco Lancio.

I love this idea. Very nicely done.
Great Will - Is this Kelvinbridge?!
great spread
actually, as the story goes in chicago-- the shoes of a deceased child are thrown up on the telephone wire, to show that they've passed a way, almost to externalize them, as no one ever really touches those lines.
its done a lot in urban areas, ghettos and such, almost like lowering a flag half mast when soldiers die in war or some other awful event happens.
oh and, my bad-- great shot, love the color.
Lovely simple image
love the simplicity of it!
Love it, the shoes really pop! this may be a worldwide practice for all I know, how funny that I sketched a street scene with sneakers from wires too not that long ago that I still have to blog.
stupot - yep, it was just near Otago street (or bank St)
Gabriel - thanks for adding that.
gabi - looking forward to seeing your version!
Good shot, Wil.
As far as I know It´s another silly urban trend of uncertain origin. Lots of hanging shoes here in Madrid and Barcelona. Done by the same kind of urban middleclassers that stencil-spray walls and so on.
A couple of links (in spanish):

thanks for the links Enrique, I'm actually working on a blog post for the paper with a sketch of a location here in Seattle where three pairs of shoes are hanging from wires. Wil's post came at a perfect timing for my research!
Thanks for the post !
I did not know this «fashion»...
Here in Sweden this shoe-throwing was common a couple of years ago. I think it was done mostly as a prank.
The sketch shows what great impact an original idea or subject has. Very nice indeed.
oh very interesting! love the picture
never saw such things
I have spotted some in Sweden too, someone told me it's a tradition to throw the shoes of someone who has just lost their virginity, but that may be an urband legend. Maybe it's just art. Thanks for a great post!
