For the sketchcrawl, I foolishly left my sketching stool at home. I have come to rely on this stool - it is light, easy to carry, and gives me a chance to choose where I want to sit. In the dark ages I would sit on the kerb, or on the pavement, or simply not at all, choosing only to sketch things which had benches opposite them. Saturday was a return to those bottom-aching times, but I think I managed ok. After sketching City Hall, I took the BART to the Mission (I really fancied a burrito) and sat at a bus-stop at the corner of Valenica and 16th. I like these sorts of intersections, with liquor stores and powerlines. Slightly grubbier neighbourhoods make me feel at home; I am from north London. I carried on up 16th, read a few zines in Needles and Pens, and sat in the shade at a very tight street corner to sketch the Mission Dolores.

Here is the obligatory hand-held sketchbook shot.

After this, I sauntered into the Castro. More to come...

wow - Pete - you took the crawling part seriously! Next crawl if you're coming to town we should head out together!
fantastic work..
great tone work as ever.
Love the in situ piece, Pete...
"choosing only to sketch things which had benches opposite them" – I laughed in recognition reading this.
Great sketches. Such detail in such a little drawing.
I usually bring a towel to sit on, but if there isn't at least a curb to sit on, my legs get so stiff from sitting on crossed legs.
cheers! i was kciking myself for leaving my sketching stool at home, but i kinda enjoyed going old skool and just sitting wherever. The old thing about choosing the spot to sit beofre the thing to draw was all too true. When i first got a stool (and one that actually folded up into my small sketching bag!) it was like a revolution, suddenly i could sit anywhere i wanted. I have a nicer one now that slings on my shoulder, weighs nothing.
The only thing I find is that now with the stool, I put my paints on the floor and I'm bending down further to get to them...
love this series...really nice. holding the moleskine up in front of the subject gives us such a nice insite. thanks :)
