Belli:"La Madon de la Neve è una Madonna
diversa assai da la Madon de' Monti...,
Sopra de lei m'ariccontava nonna
'...na storia vera da restacce tonti.
Ciovè che un cinqu'agosto, a ora certa,
nevigò in simetria su lo sterrato
fra Villa Strozzi e'r Palazzo Caserta.
E intanto un papa s'insognò un sprennore:

fa fabbricà Santa Maria Maggiore".

La campane parlanti
A saperle intendere, certe campane di Roma parlano.
La campana di Santa Maria Maggiore, per esempio, annuncia: "Avemo fatto li facioli, avemo fatto li facioli!"
Quella di San Giovanni in Laterano replica domandando: "Con che?con che?con che?"
La Campanella di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme risponde: "Co' le codichelle,co' le codichelle, co' le codichelle!"
Puccini sfruttò amabilmente i vari suoni delle campane di Roma (riprodotti nelle loro reali intonazioni) nel preludio al 3° atto della Tosca.

Forgive my awful translation of Belli's lovely rhyming verses which should be read out in Italian. Gioacchino Belli, roman poet.
" The Madonna delle nevi (Virgin of the Snow) is different from the Madonna dei Monti ( Virgin of the Hills, roman church). About it my granny used to tell me a story, a real story that leaves dumbfounded. It happened that on a 5th of August, at a certain time, it snowed on the area in between Villa Strozzi and the Caserta palace. In the meantime a pope dreamed of a splendour and was told: "go, and build Santa Maria Maggiore where snowflakes fell."
Talking Bells
If one can hear them certain roman bells can talk. Santa maria Maggiore's bells calls "Avemo fatto li facioli" ( we cooked beans). San Giovanni's one answers: "Con che?"( with what). The small bell in Santa Croce replies "Co' le codichelle" (with lardons).
Puccini used the various sounds of roman bells in their real tonalities
in the prelude of the third act of Tosca.

Putroppo se devo scrivere una poesia del Belli in romanesco non è possibile tradurla..
