I hope you all had a wonderful marvellous and above all urban Christmas! Above, Macari's musical instrument store on Charing Cross Road, London. I sketched it before going to afternoon tea at the Waldorf (very expensive, quite nice but could have been better) (plus they were right out of waldorfs). I sat on the street on my little stool. One man stopped and spoke to me. "Have you looked through that grille in the road?" he said.
"What?" I replied. "No."
"You should have a look!" he said smiling, then walked off. Probably a man in a santa suit down there or a reindeer or something. After I finished drawing I did go and look. There was nothing there. I think the bloke was just a nutter. You get them on Charing Cross Road.
As for the shop, well this is where I bought my acoustic guitar, much beloved and still played every day chez Pete, a good twelve years ago when I worked at Thorntons chocolates around the corner. What I really want is the black 12-string electric Rickenbacker guitar they have in the window. If I send them this drawing, I wonder, maybe, it is Christmas...
Urban Sketchers is a network of artists around the world who draw the cities where they live and travel to. We have this blog, which is by invitation, and a
If you want to start your own USk blog and connect all urban sketchers in your city, here's how to go about it:
1. Get a group of a minimum of 3 sketchers together interested in launching an USk blog for your city. 2. Send your names and e-mail addresses to urbansketchers at gmail dot com with a brief paragraph stating your interest in launching the blog and how you plan to keep it fresh and engage your community. You will be the blog's administrator and will be expected to run it following the rules of the group. A blog that becomes a showcase of drawings made from photos or doodles will obviously not fly. 3. We'll create the blog and give you full access to it. You'll be able to invite people to participate, personalize it with your own flag, add links and more. So, what are you waiting for? Get your fellow citizens out to sketch!

this drawing is lovely. a fair trade, i say
Maybe you missed something when you looked through the grille, or maybe what the man thought was there is no longer there... Wikipedia says:
"An interesting local feature can be found in the middle of Charing Cross Road at its junction with Old Compton Street. Beneath the grille in the traffic island in the middle of the road, the old road signs for the now-vanished Little Compton Street can be seen. This road once joined Old Compton Street with New Compton Street."
The drawinf is very nice. I've never been to London, alas, but I would recognize an urban music store anywhere. Well done. DB
Really like this one Pete, I'm hoping to go back in February for a bit of urban sketching myself.
i must have missed those old signs. I wish the guy had told me what to look for now!
